Naruto, Bleach Animator Kazunori Mizuno Passes Away

quote [ Anime fans, the industry has lost one of its brightest talents today. Reports have risen which share tragic news about an animator known for his work on shows like Naruto and Bleach. Last month, Kazunori Mizuno passed away at age 52. A slew of the artist’s colleagues began posting tributes about Mizuno on Twitter earlier today, allowing the animator’s loved ones time to mourn the loss. ]

Slightly old, but not widely covered until recently.

The Ant Channel

quote [ AntsCanada is an organization promoting the pet ant keeping hobby, myrmecology, ecology, and habitat conservation. Its aim is to make pet ant keeping simple and enjoyable and thereby promote ant awareness and inspire conservation. ]

I have been fascinated with this channel for over a month. The other videos are well worth watching.

Millennials Share The Worst Words Of Advice They Received From Baby Boomers

quote [ My boss recently told me my generation was entitled, and began quoting various articles on how we all think we're special and exempt from criticism.

As I was shoveling a dead rat out of the doorway. ]

If you hate slideshows, skip this one. If you want to hear some funny anecdotes and have time to kill while you contemplate how you'll pay your debts and where your life went so wrong... you might enjoy this.

Never Underestimate How Much America Hates Women

quote [ Many of these men (and women, too) would never admit that their hatred of Clinton was linked to her gender. She’s untrustworthy, they said—more so than a candidate who openly, compulsively lies more than any other candidate in recent memory. She’s corrupt, she has baggage, she’s shrill, she’s cold. Clinton was far from a perfect candidate, and there were lots of level-headed reasons to disagree with her. But it’s hard to look at the surplus of pure contempt lobbed at her over the years and not attribute it at least partly to the fact that she’s a woman. ]

If you still don't see it, if you still think that gender was not a major factor, I'm afraid you're unable to see it, and that is genuinely frightening.

Woolly Mammoths Suffered Genetic "Meltdown" Before Extinction

quote [ Before woolly mammoths went extinct thousands of years ago, their dwindling population suffered a series of genetic mutations that hampered their ability to survive, researchers said Thursday.

Woolly mammoths were once among the most common herbivores in North America and Siberia, but came under threat from increased hunting pressure and a warming climate. They disappeared from the Earth 3,700 years ago. ]

You read that right. Most mammoths did die out 10,000 years ago. But not all of them. Related to arrowhen's post.

So... Where IS Waldo?

quote [ I was interested in a problem deeper than where Waldo was: how the books’ creator, Martin Handford, decided to hide Waldo. Did he hide him in the corners so he would be hard to find? Or are the corners too obvious? What about the exact middle of the page?

I argued, that on the whole, Handford was sneaky. He avoided both the center and the edges. This makes scanning for Waldo more difficult.

But there is a more compelling data point that proves just how eager Handford was to hide Waldo—an undeniable piece of evidence that proves that Handford wanted people to struggle more and more. It was Handford’s surefire way to foil everyone’s Waldo’s-searching plans... ]

Stolen at Birth: The Painful Legacy of Australia's Forced Adoption Policy

quote [ Australia's institutionalized theft of babies began in the 1950s, when it was considered the ideal solution to two pressing social issues: married couples unable to conceive children of their own, and the unpalatable number of young, single women giving birth to so-called illegitimate children.

As is documented in court judgements and other official documents from the time, women such as these were considered "sexual deviants" who were "unpopular with the neighbours" and deemed "unfit" to parent. So they were denied any choice in the matter. Instead, the adoption of their babies became protocol within hospitals. ]

A Catalog of Classic Typewriters

quote [ These are the machines that brought news to the world, efficiency to the office and jobs to a whole new category of profession: the typists! Desktop typewriters were built for durability, ease and speed of typing, and good, solid op eration day in and day out. These workhorses of the business world are particularly evocative of a simpler time in history. ]

Yes, you CAN buy typewriters here. That's not the point. I don't want to sell you anything. If you like pictures of old typewriters or have one in your attic and want to know more about it, this is the place!

Old Forester’s Unique History: In Photos

quote [ In 1870, George Garvin Brown created a revolutionary new product: Old Forester Bourbon. Amazingly enough, it was the first bourbon to come from the distillery in a sealed glass bottle—up until that point, bourbon was sold to stores and bars by the barrel. (Drinkers could enjoy it by the glass or take it home in a reusable decanter.) Brown’s business would later become Brown-Forman, one of the most historic American-owned whisky companies around today. ]
