While this is bad news, I think there is hope through genetic engineering. It may be likely that currently endangered animals are already past the point where they can come back naturally, but if we chose to do so, we could artificially create genetic diversity in their populations by resurrecting and reintroducing historic material from samples.
So the question is: Should we? If so, what would be the criteria to determine which species we ought to save?
