quote [ On the time scale of several decades, some characteristics of the physical layout of urban areas can change in response to infrastructure, prices, and migration. For instance, buildings can be reshaped or replaced, and new infrastructure and services can arise. However, residential roads tend to remain where they were first placed. ]
Main link is just to a tiny NYT article. The real meat is in the scientific paper I've included in extended. It's an entire overview of sprawl in the U.S. over the last 100 years through the lens of road connectivity. Sounds kind of boring but it's cool as hell. Don't be scared off by the technical writing--it's composed so that people outside the field can understand it and has a lot of cool figures. Best PNAS paper of 2015 in my opinion.

quote [ Over the past few months, I've received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues.
I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. ] A short YouTube video making the rounds. A little trite, but I thought it was done very well.

quote [ The information in this article was gathered with the help of the tool Steam Spy that I?ve developed. Steam Spy acts a bit like an automated exit poll ? it queries random user profiles to then extrapolate this data and create a whole picture. This method has its limitations, but it is pretty accurate for owners? data and usage patterns. ]
Games! Data! Interpretations of data!

quote [ This was sent to me by a reader ? 5 reasons to avoid GMOs. The content is mostly tired anti-GMO tropes (lies, really) that have been thoroughly debunked, but it is good to address such propaganda in a concise way. Also, it is a useful demonstration of the intellectual dishonesty of the anti-GMO movement. I may not get through all of them today ? each one is so densely packed with wrong, and it takes longer to correct a misconception than to create one. ]

quote [ The new state law has been publicly sold with the claim that it is nothing new, but shows every sign of having been carefully designed to put new obstacles in the path of equality. ]
This is the article I needed to understand why the law is so terrible.

quote [ A potion made from a medieval medical recipe killed MRSA bacteria in the lab, raising hopes it could lead to new treatments for modern-day skin infections ]
Who knows if this will really pan out, but it certainly would be fun if it turns out to be a legitimate alternative if the main treatment fails.
