1930s Electronic Music With Animation 4K Restoration "Paper Sound" Nikolai Voinov

quote [ This was made back in 1930s Soviet Russia using an optical synthesizer called that variophone which takes a picture of a drawn waveform on replicates it. Sounds are drawn and paper and then dragged across the aperture to play a song. It amazes me that electronic music goes back this far and I think sounds so futuristic so I took the time to restore this little known piece ]

Paper synths bleeping along.

Train Tracks

quote [ Pondering how Tom Waits seemingly created the perfect tune for other people to sing. Major rock stars were fighting with one another to cover ?Downtown Train.? ]

I want to sing like Tom Waits

Mystery Tapes Galore: The Cassette Archive

quote [ ?I certainly have collected some unknown albums that I think are absolute shit. Not everything unknown is interesting. It?s not like every unknown cassette that I come across automatically goes into the Archive. At the end of the day, I?m interested in amplifying the voices of these tiny artists that wouldn?t get heard otherwise. I want them to survive into the amplified age.? ]

Some nice obscure tracks. It feels like interest in outsider music has declined a bit in the last internet years, like when the whole Song Poem scene was active or remixes like Mic In Track collected microphone tests found via filesharing.

UK Hip Hop 82/93 tape by Richard Russell & Trevor Jackson

quote [ The UK Hip Hop 82/93 Mixtape is a salutary reminder what a diverse (not to mention downright odd) scene this was: Malcolm Mclaren/Buffalo Gals and Art Of Noise nudge up against Blade and Demon Boyz. Massive Attack, Blade and Derek B all feature. ]

A great feature that ?the YouTube link has a tracklist but there's some 2012 post with more details, supposedly marking this a rare tape.

How "Tom's Diner" Tuned the MP3

quote [ The man looked shocked. ?No, Miss Vega, it is exactly the same.? ]

Interesting anecdote. The article links to a recollection of Vega herself (quote source), very cool.

Interesting info on classic music production. You can complement it with listening to the Reverberation surf music podcast.

The First Record Producers

quote [ After falling out with just about everyone he?d ever worked with, Meek set up his own RGM studio above a leather-goods shop at 304 Holloway Road, the main road north out of London. Vocals were recorded in the toilet, string sections stood on the stairs, and it should have been a joke. Instead, two of the best records he ever made appeared almost straight away: Mike Berry?s ?Tribute to Buddy Holly,? and John Leyton?s ?Johnny Remember Me,? both in ?61. ]

Book excerpt detailing the crass characters of early producer stars. Found by recommendation from the author of my last post.

The Exotica Project: One Hundred Dreamland 45s

quote [ While the term did get thrown around a bit [?], exotica was never the codified genre. In its time, exotica might be applied to a straightforward piano reading of Ravel's Scheherazade or a volume of Russian or Gypsy folk song. Conversely, contemporary references in trade magazines like Billboard would just as likely characterize the latest Gene Rains Group or Tak Shindo release as "tropical piano jazz," "exotic novelty" or "big-band jazz with Oriental flourishes" as they would "exotica." ]

Collection of singles with fine-grained filters for a genre who's revival seems something like 20 years ago.

Note how the view back then was somehow distorted to begin with.
