Gridland

quote [ Match. Build. Survive. ]

One part Bejeweled, one part puzzle, one part turn-based RPG, and one part real-time combat simulator. During the day, match tiles to gain resources, which you use to upgrade your buildings, weapons, and armor. At night, match tiles to get your sword and shield...and also summon deadly monsters. You'll need to carefully time and plan your matches, and the use of powerups from your loot chests, if you are to survive.

I've been addicted to this fucker all weekend. A lot of the game is figuring out what things do what. Fortunately, it is also forgiving: if you die, you are reset to the previous day.

+1 kinda works on mobile. Neat.

I was so confused why I was getting slaughtered during the night. I was madly mashing 3s and 4s of anything, not realizing I was the one spawning monsters.

Things seem to have issues after playing for an hour or so. My video driver crashed the first time, and this time the guy/monsters are moving very jerkily.

It could also stand to have a manual. Here's what I've got so far:
Main hut -- upgrades food at a point I don't know (no individual upgrade bars under it), spawns normal melee units
Kiln -- upgrades brick, spawns tough melee units
Weaver -- upgrades cloth, spawns archers
Forge -- upgrades iron/swords (though it's hard to see the swords DO upgrade, their graphics get shiny later)
Lumber Mill -- upgrades wood/shields

Upgraded resources make more with each match. Upgraded food heals you for every match. Upgraded swords do more damage and have more uses. Upgraded shields take more hits. Upgraded monsters are a lot tougher.

A day is based on the matches you make (manual ones, cascades count as a single match), not on actual time. At night it's best to wait for combat to stop so the character can loot chests (can give bombs, an instant sword/shield, or a healing potion) and so you don't get overwhelmed. The number of tiles matched at night doesn't give stronger weapons/armor, but cascades can turn lethal very quickly. Night advances with monsters defeated, not monsters spawned, so if you're doing poorly franticlally making matches won't help.

At some point monster chests can reward purple slivers. Some number of those (probably 3, I have 2 currently) looks like it'll unlock a new building.

I was having problems. I upgraded my limber and weaving too high and night time was basically death- I fixed it by making sure I connected four plus to get spirits and used the magic to fight and skip over the nights when I was in trouble (always). That bought me time to upgrade my sword and shield high enough to fight.

Also the spirit enemy is hilarious. Kinda. I fucking hate the fire elementals.

I'm not sure what all of the magic does.
You can change night to day; you can speed your actions up (so you can fight super fast etc) and there is a clock that freezes time?... And not sure what the loop circle thing does,

If you click on a building it puts a little star over it and that building gets first dibs on resources. For example, the kiln and lumber mill both use cloth; if you're trying to upgrade your lumber mill first, set the star on it and all your cloth will go there.

The main hut might upgrade when you level up from fighting monsters; a couple of times when I leveled up during the night, the hut upgraded when it switched back to day (every... three levels, maybe?) Or that could have just been a coincidence.

I also thought it might upgrade when it's full- but it seems like that would be silly.

Nice game thanks for filling my night with hot hot pron.

There's a point at which nothing upgrades and it's just fight...fight....fight...

I guess that's the end?

Argh. I'm at day 33 and I've reached a point where it's taking me 1-2 hours of constant retries before I manage to survive a night. It all seems to come down to whether or not the monsters drop enough potions, bombs, etc. to keep me alive until daybreak.

I don't have a problem with that -- I didn't expect to beat the game on the first try -- but what's frustrating is that I can't figure out if I'm supposed to be dying all the time because it's a game about trying to beat the RNG every night until you're lucky enough to get the goodies you need to survive or if I'm dying all the time due to poor upgrading decisions I made in earlier days because it's a game about making the right decisions early on so you're not screwed later. Either way would be fine, but it would be nice if the game could at least let me know whether I was expected to grind my way to eventual victory or start over with a different strategy.
