Response to BBC transphobia

quote [ What really annoys me is that the BBC said that the article “met their standards” which to me isn’t a defense of the article, it’s a damnation of their standards

So, Shaun the talking skull isn't the first place I've heard of this article, but he did sum it up better than the earlier ones I've seen about it. And Shaun has previously talked about the BBC's transphobia in at least one other video, where he goes into Terry Pratchett's "Monstrous Regiment". I'll say a little more in extended.

What really bugs me is aside from being disgusted at some pretty bloody shameless bigotry, I had earlier this year just discovered Lily Cade through her stuff on the social media sextape site I've been plugging, which I found through SE, of course. I watched one of Lily's video with my spouse, who told me it was the hottest porn she had ever seen. So, I was understandably a fan, and I'm not in the habit of looking up the views & opinions of every entertainer I get into. Frankly, who has that kind of time? But here I am, with trans and enby people in my family, I've been feeling pretty damned protective of them. And the hate she put out, and the casual acceptance of that hate from this and other incidents with BBC reporting is maddening. I want to support good people. I do not want to support bigots, either by giving them dollars to watch them have sex or ad revenue from following them as a news source. Fuck, I've lost my train of thought. I'm just pissed about this, for several reasons. I hope I got enough of them across.

The thing that gives me hope is that eventually cultural / societal fears give way to acceptance (through activism, social justice and persistence of course).
It is strange to me as an adult that people aren't more self-aware and reflective of their own fears. Articles like this just fuel the problem though, it validates fear.

I don't know how I feel about separating the art from the artist when the artist is problematic but the art isn't. I used to think it was easy, but sometimes it isn't and maybe that's a personal choice. I hope you can find some equally hot porn star who isn't a dumpster fire of a human being off-set though. I'm sure they exist

I remember when I used to think the BBC was a viable alternative to US media. They're just shittier in their own way, unfortunately.

Also, good skull post.👍

The BBC is in a strange position, where much of it's entertainment is left-wing, but it's news reporting is right-wing.
This leaves a bunch of people complaining about the shows they air, and the overall impression that the entire BBC is left-leaning.
