Auckland adman hires professional clown for redundancy meeting

quote [ A Kiwi adman has chosen an unusual support person to accompany him to a redundancy meeting.

In lieu of the usual suspects of a friend, colleague or family member, the member of the creative team at FCB hired a professional clown to attend the meeting with him. ]

Ont the upside, the firm was so impressed, the clown starts next week.

As an American, There are many things about this that are alien to me.
1) redundancy = layoffs? I don’t think that word means what you think it means.
2) meetings about getting fired/laid off? In the USA, there are no meetings. You get shown the door and might get a letter explaining unemployment benefits and COBRA.
3) bringing someone to the meeting? American HR departments run in secrecy. If you’re getting fired and if you’re lucky enough to be fired in a meeting, the only other person allowed would be your boss.
4) maybe if I understood those parts, then maybe I’d understand the clown part.

Oh, and if you were lucky enough to get early warning that you were getting fired, there’s no way it would be enough time to arrange for a paid professional to show up at your workplace. In the USA, early warning might be “come to the HR office after lunch”
