So What Else Has North Korea Been Up To This Year?

quote [ North Korea continued efforts to develop its missile and nuclear capabilities during 2014. Although the opacity of this Northeast Asian country makes any attempt to meaningfully assess the strategic potential of either North Korean program a difficult task, open source information can provide some insights into the progress it has made. Of particular importance are its advancements in nuclear infrastructure, the quantities of nuclear fuel produced, and the country?s ballistic missile program. ]

A sober summary of the general progress of North Korea's big projects for the year. It's not really a primer on the general state of North Korea in any sense and just focuses on new advancements for the year in a few key areas so maybe the info will just be a bunch of random acronyms for some.

Personally, I'd like this as it's own post. Some thoughts: 1) Shows how stupidly fearful some humans can be. 2) At least it was a shitty movie so I don't care all that much if it's ever released. 3) I'm still seeing commercials for the movie on TV, which I find tickling.

US-Cuba relations: Global praise for normalisation of ties . Maybe that Peace Prize wasn't as stupid as it sounded in 2009, when Obama's only accomplishment was not being Bush.

You know, Obama isn't exactly what the American Left wanted in 2008, and God knows he wasn't what the Right wanted. But he seems to be what America needed, and quite honestly that's pretty wonderful because it absolutely did not have to happen.

Kind of like what we were hoping for in the UK with Tony Blair after the Thatcher years. And what a goddamn disappointment that fucker turned out to be.

Respectfully, I have to disagree. I feel like the majority of positive points that people attribute to Obama are still because he's NOT Bush and because he's got that D next to his name. If he was a republican and the news organizations' party positions were swapped back to the Bush years, with FOXNews backing him instead of MSNBC I think people would have a much different perception of him. Many of the US policies that had people screaming at Bush and calling him "Hitler" have still continued and even expanded under the Obama administration. Even some of the more positive things Obama has gotten credit for like the timetables for pulling out of Iraq were put into place under the Bush administration. Hell, his crowning achievement was basically a Republican health care plan from the 90s.

And here's the thing, I like Obama. When he speaks candidly I often agree with him, but I've found that usually when I find myself agreeing with him, he's speaking on an issue he has no control over or he's neutered himself on. For example, Obama has suddenly become incredibly vocal about Net Neutrality less than a year after appointing an FCC chairman who is doing everything he can to make sure that it doesn't happen. The things Obama says he's for and the actions of him and his administration often simply do not coincide.

Obama has been great president, for a Republican that's not Bush. And he's done a great job of pulling the Democratic party and its supporters even further to the right. But as a liberal, he's a fucking nightmare.

If you get a chance, read "The Mold of Yancy" by Phillip Dick. It's a short story found in the collection housed with the Minority Report.

Will do, thanks. Been meaning to catch up on some Dick.

You don't want to go too long without Dick. Everyone needs some Dick now and then.

That was a great read. Thank you for the recommendation. I think about that kind of stuff a lot so I really enjoyed it quite a bit.

Eh. I only have two major beefs with him. One being the continuation of taking advantage of the Patriot Act and the ignoring of the people's cry for the government to respect their privacy in the digital age. The other being his lack of follow-through with dealing with the student debt problem. I think I'm overall okay with the Obama presidency.
steele said @ 12:57pm GMT on 19th Dec
Out of curiosity did you happen to vote for him? Because I'm sure you know that would compromise your opinion. ;)

I don't think "the people" are on our side on this. Most people I encounter aren't very worried about this, they're more concerned about criminals after their bank accounts or similar. The government is trying to thwart terrorists, catch spies, etc.
