some security cameras have speakers on them. If i was going to hack in to security cameras i would get way to distracted by trying to convince people the room was haunted.

What was that post back on the old site whose name we shall never speak about the search engine that finds unprotected networks or whatever? People could log into power plants, electrical grids, security cameras, etc. There's no way these are just legally publicly available are they?
v0idmagus said @ 5:34am GMT on 25th Feb
SHODAN is the search engine. Publicly available sure - legally...eh? Kinda all depends on a) what harm is caused and b) if it can be tracked.

The letters should be the same color as all the others. Then they won't be distracting.
azazel said @ 2:19pm GMT on 25th Feb
Move it to the profile page. I don't like it, and I've promised to subscribe.
Arrowhen said @ 3:37pm GMT on 25th Feb
That would be ideal in my opinion, although I understand from a site owner's perspective you'd want it more visible than that to encourage more subscribers.

I do think it looks better as just a letter instead of the whole word. What about moving it in front of the user name instead of after? It would be more visible (as the user name would appear indented) but wouldn't break up the flow of the comment.

Also, are the gift subscriptions from the higher levels going to be anonymous? If I'm going to be nice to someone I'd rather they not know about it.
azazel said @ 3:43pm GMT on 25th Feb
Or at least let me hide my shame by making it something I can turn off in the options.
steele said @ 4:40pm GMT on 25th Feb
I can make it an option in each subscriber's profile. But if you're going to see supporting the community as something to be ashamed of... There's nothing I can do about that.
Arrowhen said @ 4:57pm GMT on 25th Feb [Score:1 Insightful]
I can't speak for Azazel, but for myself, I don't see supporting my community as something to be ashamed of (and I wish my bank would hurry the fuck up and send me my new card so I can do just that!), I find BRAGGING about it shameful.

Would it be possible to make it a subscriber option to turn off our own view of EVERYONE'S subscriber tags? While it would be nice if I wasn't enough of a dick that I'd be tempted to value someone's opinion less because they weren't willing to cough up a few bucks to support the site, the fact remains that I AM that much of a dick, so I think it would be cool if I could opt out of having that information available to me.
mechanical contrivance said @ 5:08pm GMT on 25th Feb
That seems like a good idea. If one is already a subscriber, they don't need to be encouraged to subscribe, so there's no harm in hiding commenters' subscription status. I may not like it, but my opinions of commenters may be colored by their subscription status or lack thereof.
steele said @ 5:08pm GMT on 25th Feb
sure I can have that as a subscriber option.

but personally I think if you're thinking about it as bragging you're looking at it wrong. as a subscriber you're helping to keep the lights on in this place. In the past week I've spent way more than 40 hours on getting everything up and going and I wouldn't have been able to do that without the support of subscribers. a little mark next to your name to say "I'm helping out." also encourages other people to do the same.
steele said @ 5:13pm GMT on 25th Feb
i may change it to a little image later on if I can come up with something I like.

How about a counter on the main page. "X perverts are helping to avoid another SEpocalypse" or something similar. It encourages investment in our shared little webspace, is a reminder of the value that the members place in the site, and its another venue to add something similar to the taglines.

It's tough. I understand the desire to do something for people who contribute. Particularly for steele, who needs to make this a worthwhile paying concern and wants to encourage people to contribute. Hell, I like getting stuff. But I can't think of a way to do it without violating the spirit of the community.
milkman666 said @ 7:47pm GMT on 25th Feb
The value comes from our interactions with one another. The conversations that evolve and the personalities that collide. Having status for yourself attached to supporting the site might not be ideal, but perhaps a selection of contributor mods? +1 Funsightful +1 Derpy, and so on. Maybe a purchasable title you give someone that lasts for a period of time or an amount of comments, whichever is longer. I would spring 5 bucks for a pack of 3 perhaps. There were times when i would have liked to give Naruki something akin to the title of "Magnificent Bastard". Maybe an option for them turn it off, unless its a 10 dollar version with a shorter duration. Mr cucumbur could have kept the previous site afloat with the vitriol he presumably had. Buying "Cocksucker" for every username on their enemy list.

And you should really consider keeping it one colour, that gold burns the eyes. Might look okay with one colour and raised as you have it now though.

Also, there should be a space between name and 'said', right now it says 'azazelsaid'. Also, bring back moderate/reply, mod/reply looks different.

Basically, I don't like change.

The thing though, with "mod/reply" at least, is that it's not a necessary change. What in particular, do you think changing it from "moderate/reply" to "mod/reply", will accomplish?

The g looks much better now. I still don't like it, but I guess I can live with it. I, as arrowhen (if you capitalize my a I will lowercase yours), don't want to see who's who because I will think less of those who aren't paying (speaking of which, I'll get right on that, after I get this month's paycheck).

Don't think of it as boasting. Think of it as a vaccine against site rot, like a form of herd immunity. The more people we have being open about being supportive of the site, the more of a defense we will have against many of the issues that plagued the old site.
lilmookieesquire said @ 10:33pm GMT on 25th Feb

whatever you changed with putting the raised thing in there, wipes the names of each and every comment when using modified sensible facial (I just changed references to erection to endowment, was working fine earlier today, now it turns off the commenters names so I don't know who said what. Mostly I only wanted it to skip from one new comment to the next new comment, I also liked the red outline around new posts. turned it off for now.
