Spock Is Dead!!!!!!

quote [ He was 83. ]

This saddens me deeply.

Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut ?Star Trek,? died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.

I worked for years at a big art gallery in NYC where Nimoy and his wife would frequently buy very expensive artwork. He was not the most pleasant person to deal with and he frequently bought extremely boring art.

A comedian I love, Harris Wittles also Died this week:

For Harris Wittles podcasts, I recommend his You Made It Weird appearance.

He tells the story of his addiction and rehab in a funny and amazingly honest way that only a great comedian could.

I'm saddened by Mr. Nimoy's death a lot more than I would have predicted. There was a time in my early teens when I thought Mr. Spock was the pinnacle of humanoid consciousness. I've learned a lot since then, but I'm sure there is still a not insignificant corner of my mind that was profoundly influenced by both that character and the interviews I read and watched with Mr. Nimoy in the late 70s and early 80. In its own way, "In Search Of..." was a sideways introduction to my next love, Cosmos. Sagan's writing had a huge influence on the way I perceive the world, and I owe a bit of that to ISO.

UPDATE: Bank of Canada urges ‘Star Trek’ fans to stop ‘Spocking’ their fivers

Bank of Canada is pleading with Star Trek fans to stop “Spocking” its five dollar bills. Since Leonard Nimoy’s death, Canadian folks have been “Spocking” the hell out of the five dollar bill that features a portrait of Canada’s seventh prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier.
