quote [ Harvard Law School has decided to drop its crest because of links to an 18th Century slave owner in the latest race row to engulf a leading university. ]

So is the version with the sheaves (not sheaths) of wheat on people's backs pictured in the article the original version, or is that just commentary on the crest?

edit: apparently it is just commentary. Here's an early version of the crest in question.

I certainly understand the desire to change the school's crest because of relation to slavery, but how far should that go? I live in the state of Maryland, and our flag includes elements from the Calvert family crest. It was Charles Calvert, 3rd Baron of Baltimore that for economic reasons decided that all slaves that came to the colony would be slaves for life as well as all their children. Previously, a slave that converted to Christianity and was baptised would be freed. Should we change our state flag because of that association? The Calvert family has a long and involved association with the history of the state. Should we ignore that because there is also an association with slavery?

I don't have an answer. History is messy. There will always be distasteful associations with something or other.

In general I think these things tend to be a bit overblown, but I don't know, it's basically a copy of the dude's crest and he burned 77 people alive, so fuck him?

Actually, it's about ethics in school crests.

I don't understand this sentiment a lot of the time. These were students attending Harvard who protested and got it changed. Did that somehow diminish the available amount of protest and/or ability to change things in the universe?

The 'real issues' sentiment tends to be put forward by people who are themselves not doing anything about the 'real issues' they purport to be championing. I find it very easy to dismiss.

Indeed. Time spent by the privileged elite protesting against someone no one cares about or remembers does take time away about things that matter.

Does it though? Can you give us an example of how this protest has taken you away from the work you are doing addressing the 'real issues' you think are a higher priority?

I can't because I couldn't give a rat' ass about it. You could however ask what time is taken away by those involved. A synopsis of the real issues can be found in today's morning paper.

I only devote time and energy to one or two issues at moment, the one I am working on now is fostering diversity amongst corporate boards.

You need to at least use acceptable Englich bigotry. Rename them the Plebs or something.

As soon as this great victory for BLM has been won, the next wave of aggrieved wankers will vilify Harvard for “white" washing its complicity in black oppression by bowdlerizing its history.

That’s the best part of the “social justice” movement: It’s ouroboros. It eats itself first. All you have to do is sit back and watch.

Wait. You're trying to vilify Harvard for “white" washing its complicity in black oppression by bowdlerizing its history?

Also I didn't know the GOP was part of the social justice movement.

Is that like removing Jefferson from textbooks?

I wonder what Sally Hemmings would have to say about this?
