Hmm. In my state, the average settlement for a Wrongful Death of a minor is only about $4 million (and significantly less if it involves auto insurance). Seems like Wrongful Arrest should call for something significantly lower.

Yes, but my point was really that in our system, and in many others, it's actually cheaper to kill someone than to seriously injure them or to deny them their rights. In extreme situations, this leads to instances where someone is accidentally injured by another, then subsequently killed on the spot because it's going to be significantly cheaper in the long run. It's totally screwed up, but the police department might have been better off, financially, if the boy had suffered a fatal "accident" while in police custody.

This is a thing in China I hear. If you hit someone with a car, you're suppose to back over them and finish the job.

Yeah, I've seen what look like legit videos of it happening. Pretty horrific.

This is because in China, if someone is seriously wounded and you are found to be at fault, you can be held responsible for all of their care for the rest of the victim's life. The amount for accidentally killing someone is much more reasonable in comparison.

Don't forget: that's tax money this little shit is going after. Your money. It will not result in anyone directly involved in this little escapade getting any punishment not already handed out.

It was a nice little story of a bad situation turning around, and like anything that spends too long under the heat lamp of the public eye, it went moldy.

The dollar amount seems high, but the Texas police and especially the mayor, did say some pretty crappy things about him. I thought the support from the President and offers of education etc from tech companies would serve as a sort of proxy apology (we're sorry they're assholes), but it would be good to hear an actual apology from the people who actually launched the slander and death threats.

Hmmm it says they want apologies and they'll wait 60 days before a lawsuit. They'll probably settle out of court for a fraction of the cost. I'm sure the money will last longer than the good will, but it seems like bad PR.
