quote [ Taking dictation, revising manuscripts, typing copies, literary amanuenses often labour for little compensation and even less recognition. Christine Jacobson explores the neglected efforts of women like Theodora Bosanquet, Véra Nabokov, and Valerie Eliot, who — through their work as typists, editors, and champions — had a profound impact on modern literature. ]

My first 'proper' job after University was in publishing, this would be in the mid-90s. A fairly new Macintosh Classic (XO) sat on my desk and it was the early days of shifting from typesetting to desk top publishing.
The director of our division dictated all his correspondence into a dictaphone, even his emails (although more often his faxes), and his PA would sit at their desk and transcribe them all using a foot operated playback machine and headphones. I still remember the buzz that went round the office the first time Geoff typed an email by himself. |
