I don't know why there is a "migration" towards streaming services except that set up by the providers in the first place.
Rogers in Canada offered an "anywhere on demand" where you could watch old episodes and stream live t.v. - this came out in 2017. It was removed as a "legacy". the "new" version of Rogers T.V. REQUIRES a modem and if the next is down your t.v. has gone. Most streaming services run commercials now and the ones where you can watch full "new" episodes force you to watch commercials. For example, I can use my Rogers T.V. subscription to log into Global's streaming site AND I STILL HAVE TO WATCH COMMERCIALS. - the same sort fo bullshit that Netflix and it's kin are making us do. T.V. wants to keep us (or does it?) with back to back to back episodes of Big Bang Theory - what exactly do I do? Piracy had always been the answer. Now it's just more and more the answer. |

When you get cable, you have to get all the cable (or at least much of it)

It honestly wouldn't be as bad if you could cherry-pick the channels you want and even pay slightly more for them if they were "premium" but they still force you to take "packages"

The few media corps who own everything force the providers to take the channels in packages. The providers then pass that along to you.

It was inevitable. We had over 1000 scripted shows a year in the US alone. Then Hulu and then the strike proved Americans are willing to view foreign media now... which means even more licensing opportunities, buying content in packages, and no royalties to pay. With that much content and a way to get around royalties by avoiding US-based unions, do they really need to make new shows? And if they plan to, do they really need to do it in any country that isn't favorable to them? This already happened over the last 20 years with cable TV as many networks moved production to Georgia for tax credits and no SAG-AFTRA.
It isn't like you'll all stop consuming on principle. You can't. You're junkies. You'll just illegally download anyway, and while the services make nothing on that, at least they don't have to pay royalties. |

Cable TV is being gutted by streaming in much the same way as main street is being gutted by Walmart/Amazon. In this case, it seems somewhat self-inflicted, however, as the cable networks could produce content for both streaming and broadcast, but don't.
