Another point: even if your did want to impose scarcity and originality concepts onto digital art, you could do the same thing easily and with trivial energy use through ordinary crypto. NFTs are just another example of people trying, and failing, to find a problem that blockchain can be a solution to.

While I agree that it's a big issue, I don't think it was fair that the author presented a non argument in arguing why proof of stake won't be a solve. Yes it's taken time, but it's also not a simple problem to solve, and getting it wrong could have significantly worse consequences than getting it late.
