quote [ Of the many things that social platforms have taken away from us, perhaps the most disappointing is the freedom to customize our spaces. We need it back. ]
I remember you way back, back from MySpace

I do miss Angelfire, Geocities, and Insidetheweb forums. I mean, most of it was an aesthetic nightmare, but there was a wonderful freedom to such a low barrier of entry.

I hated MySpace so much. Blue text on red backgrounds, illegible fonts, those auto-playing songs. Some people should not customize their space for the sake of our eyes and ears.
It was good for indie bands. Most of everyone else should have stuck to geocities/maxpages for fan pages, deviantart for drawings, fanfic for fan fic, and diaryland/livejournal for their personal lives. Then you meet people with similar interests on those platforms, exchange AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo (thanks, Trillian!) and develop a friendship there. Message boards also a great place to meet people with your interests. |
