Indian film-maker Daniel Shravan suggests legalising ‘rape without violence’

quote [ “Rape is not a serious thing, but murder is inexcusable. The government should legalise rape without violence for the safety of women. It seems to be the only way rape victims can be protected from murder,” Shravan said, in a now-deleted post.

The film-maker said that women should “cooperate with rapists and carry condoms” with them.

“If you are about to get raped, hand over a condom to the rapist and cooperate with him while he fulfils his sexual desire. That way he will not try to harm you,” Shravan added. ]

We get something like this every couple of years. Is it bad that I read it and thought, 'At least he's only trivializing rape instead of saying women rape men every time they say no..."? Probably.

Seems fair, as long as the same rule applies to men getting sodomized, with a line forming behind danny boy so he can show how harmless his idea is in execution.

This is one of those weird topics. When it comes to personal survival, yes, most women are going to let it happen so they don't get murdered or beaten to a pulp. But you can't give that out as advice. And you definitely can't make laws and PSAs surrounding that. The answer is always that rapists have to stop raping. How you respond to a crime committed against you is a personal decision you have to make for yourself in the moment. Should not happen and will not happen are sadly two different things.

These are subjects women talk about quietly with eachother when there are no men around to listen. For those of us who can fight, the discussion is whether we really want to commit to potentially killing someone else, go through the court battle against charges for it (with the same narrative of 'are you sure you didn't just change your mind?'), live knowing you've killed someone... And let's say I can subdue a guy without beating him so badly he dies. He has clear evidence I beat him up, but I do not have clear evidence he did rape or was about to rape me. Maybe I won't kill him, maybe he won't report it, but that's a gamble.

People always ask why we don't fight back. We're scared we can't win on many levels (can't win the fight, can't win in court, can't win with our own conscience, can't win socially). It's horrible, but the easier answer for most women is to let it happen and then go on with their lives pretending it didn't. And that's not an easy answer, far from it, it's just the least impossible choice of a selection of impossible choices.

That's not how rape works.
