quote [ Can ordinary people be taught how to navigate a dozen opaque unresponsive agencies and corporations in order to eventually build a mom and pop shop or a duplex? Maybe. Could all the rules be changed to make traditional incremental development legal again? In theory… sure. But the process is like eating Jell-O with chopsticks: slow, tedious, and thoroughly unsatisfying. Count me out. So what are the alternatives? ]
A Jeff Vogel rant reminded me of this introduction of trying to support sustainable urban societies by a initiative called IncDev.
Now all of this sounds very North American to my ears but the part where one is torn between self-explotation and being a rather meaningless cog is relatable.

Eating jello with chopsticks is easy if you don’t butcher it into a pile of muck. Just make it a touch firmer and lift, don’t squeeze.

right. you eat it like rice. lift or scrape/push. dont squeeze.
i ate with chopsticks the entire year of 2001. everything. my only utensil i allowed myself was chopsticks. can still use them ambidexterously to simultaneously eat as well. |

Pretty good article, too. It covers a lot of territory: mixed use zoning, do-it-yourself improvement, backyard infill. It's basically a corporate world vs. individual enterprise, but focused on how to make neighborhoods livable again.
