Sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground

quote [ Defense Secretary James Mattis has resigned. Here’s the letter

“Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position.” ]

After the out of the blue announcement of the withdrawal in Syria followed shortly the announcement of the withdrawal from Afghanistan Mattis seems to have had enough.

Standing on the precipitous of a goveremnt shutdown over funding for a Mexican border wall these moves by Trump seem bizarre and are in direct opposition of the Republican party , the military, and inelegance agencies.

This is beyond the "normal" Trump weirdness. (It is getting hard to even say that)

It looks like Trump is going to close down the goveremnt over the wall that Mexico is suppose to pay for, then go to Florida for a few weeks of golf. He has changed defense deployments by tweet with no prior notice or consultation with the pentagon the joint chiefs or congress...Merry Christmas, world.

The reason for the sudden switch is obvious.

Conservative media turns on Trump for going wobbly on the wall

Fox News, Breitbart and others have stuck with Trump through almost everything — but the wall is different.

His true constituency "Conservative Media" turned on him. My question is what is going to happen when he eventfully has to back down..because he will not get funding even through a Republican congress.

Even though it has passed the house it will never get through the Senate...it will not get one Democratic vote.

There will be a few back and fourths in DC but most of DC has gone or getting ready to go home...this is headed to a brick wall (pun intended). Trump has to blink or accept the consequences...pay the devil to the left (His base) or the devil to the right (the 70% that is the rest of us.) He has never faced anything like the pressure he is about to face...and he look like he is about to crack now.

The more I hear about this the worst it sounds. I looks like the reason we are getting out of Syria is because Turkey said they are going to attack the Kurds , you know our allies the people who fought with us from day one when the Turks wouldn't.

shocked reaction by the U.S. led coalition to Donald Trump's announcement of a pullout of U.S. troops from Syria, and why the move seems more in the interest of Turkey than the United States.

Turkey is massing troops near a town in northern Syria held by a U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led force, a war monitor said as Turkish media reported Sunday new reinforcements crossing the borders.

The Turkish buildup comes even though Turkey said it would delay a promised offensive in eastern Syria in the wake of President Donald Trump's decision this week to withdraw U.S. troops.

I know I may be chicken little, but I'm still holding my breath for a Trump attempt at a coup during a government shutdown.
bbqkink said @ 7:11am GMT on 21st Dec
I think it is a whole lot more likely it goes the other way around and the military are the ones to hold the coup. I don't think it has gotten to that point yet but this is the wake up call. To many have died to maintain the world order to let Trump destroy it for profit.

Not at all sure what the military is going to do. There may be more resignations. But this is not over.

Another one.

Brett McGurk, the US envoy to the global coalition fighting ISIL, resigned this week over his disagreement with President Donald Trump's surprise decision to pull US troops out of Syria, US media reported on Saturday, citing unnamed sources.

Both the Associated Press and CBS news reported the departure, saying McGurk submitted his resignation letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday, a day after Defense Secretary James Mattis said he was leaving his post.

Uhhhh...you don’t know your own coordinator of the anti-ISIS campaign?

Over the past 5 years, no one has done more to put ISIS on its heels than Brett. We all know and rely on him. The fact that our President has no clue who Brett is should scare the hell out of every American.
Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

Brett McGurk, who I do not know, was appointed by President Obama in 2015. Was supposed to leave in February but he just resigned prior to leaving. Grandstander? The Fake News is making such a big deal about this nothing event!

The fact that you say you don’t know @brett_mcgurk speaks volumes about your commitment to fighting ISIS @realDonaldTrump. Why don’t you know the man who has done more than any civilian to degrade ISIS? I can assure you @BarackObama knows him well.

Of there is a silver lining it is that Dep. Sec. of Defense Shanahan to assume Acting Sec. title following Mattis resignation...well qualified and sane.

Megathread] Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to Step Down in February

Here a a few quotes

London Bridge is falling down,

Falling down, falling down....

Last adult to leave. We are so fucked.

I was in Afghanistan back in ‘04 and this rash, unplanned pullout is going to have absolute horrific consequences for us geopolitically and the people of Syria and Afghanistan. The Kurds are most certainly going to be slaughtered by the Turks and I fear that there will be all out war in Afghanistan. The President is not fit to serve the office he holds. If there ever was a time to exercise the 25th, now is the time.

bbqkink said @ 7:32am GMT on 21st Dec
In Syria, the United States is abandoning Kurdish comrades-in-arms who trusted America’s word. The U.S. is now preparing to abandon Afghanistan to the Taliban. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Brussels on December 4 to insult the European Union on its home ground. Trump has egged on Brexit, dangling a (completely false) hope of a speedy U.S.-U.K. free-trade treaty to encourage hard-line Brexiteers to crash out of the EU in March without a transitional treaty. Meanwhile, sanctions are being lifted on the enterprises of Paul Manafort’s former patron Oleg Deripaska, even as the U.S. continues to wage trade war not only upon China, but against Canada, the U.K., and the European Union as well.

No More Excuses

The resignation of James Mattis leaves Congress to face the truth about Trump.

Jeez - talk about a bunch of suckers. Even if you multiply 80 by the 39 million that actually voted for the orange turd (and half of them were voting against Clinton and not for trump) you only get 3.12 billion. Only 77 billion left to go...

Of course - little things like reading and using a simple pocket calculator are huge things to ask though.

The only problem with your statement is

If the DNC fucks around and anoints a candidate

See that's not how it works...votes is how it works. And there are going to be more than 20 Dems running there will be many different plans to chose from. Now you can bet the power brokers will have their favorite , Remember the DNC was mostly appointed by Clinton. She was the nominee.

On the other side Trump is preparing for the inevitable primary challenge. He has grabbed all of the reigns of power.

President Donald Trump's political operation will subsume much of the Republican Party's apparatus ahead of 2020's presidential election, party sources tell CNN, merging his already up and running re-election campaign with the Republican National Committee.
The re-election campaign and part of the RNC will work under one roof and be dubbed Trump Victory under the new plan, which highlights just how much Trump has conquered the party that once saw him as an outsider.

President Donald Trump is planning to roll out an unprecedented structure for his 2020 reelection, a streamlined organization that incorporates the Republican National Committee and the president’s campaign into a single entity.

It’s a stark expression of Trump’s stranglehold over the Republican Party: Traditionally, a presidential reelection committee has worked in tandem with the national party committee, not subsumed it.

They have even got South Carolina to not have a primary to ensure Trump is the candidate.

And there are all kinds of rumors of John Kasich running in a primary or in a mixed ticked with a Democrat.

How is this not obstruction of justice?

The first known instance took place when Trump made his displeasure clear to acting attorney general Matt Whitaker after Cohen pleaded guilty November 29 to lying to Congress about a proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow. Whitaker had only been on the job a few weeks following Trump's firing of Jeff Sessions.

Over a week later, Trump again voiced his anger at Whitaker after prosecutors in Manhattan officially implicated the President in a hush-money scheme to buy the silence of women around the 2016 campaign -- something Trump fiercely maintains isn't an illegal campaign contribution. Pointing to articles he said supported his position, Trump pressed Whitaker on why more wasn't being done to control prosecutors in New York who brought the charges in the first place, suggesting they were going rogue.

“The president of the United States is discussing a case in which he’s implicated with the attorney general. That is wrong at every level and of course it will taint anything this acting attorney general does,” Schiff said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

“This is a real assault on the rule of law and we’re going to scrutinize every single action by Matt Whitaker so the public knows just what he does,” Schiff, who will likely become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee when Democrats take over the House majority in January, added.
