Boomerang to Have Original Content

quote [ "Boomerang will continue to air Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, The Powerpuff Girls, and Scooby-Doo, but will add newly-acquired contemporary series produced by studios around the world." ]

I see a couple of possible motivations for this:

Boomerang's ratings were failing. Rather than pull the channel, TW's decided to split original content between their two cartoon channels in an effort to improve Boomerang's numbers. CN and Boomerang are run by the same President (part of the same group).

Someone high up in that group wanted to make their mark in order to compete for higher positions at TW later.

What do you guys think?

Bring back Marni Nixon!

I never would have thought Yogi Bear would be the bottom in a pairing with Huckleberry Hound. Live and learn.

Also, how many classic Tom and Jerry/Looney Tunes cartoons are left that aren't virulently racist by today's standards*?

*apparently Speedy Gonzalez portraying Mexicans as smart and cool falls into this category. Sigh.

My advice is to relax and let Whoopi Goldberg explain:

What's the title of that? My phone shows embedded YouTube vids as either a blank space or an non-interactive picture.

They are also just full of contemporary references that no child today will ever get; so many of the jokes are lost now. Bugs Bunny chews a carrot because of Clark Gable, Foghorn is a radio character crossed with a senator, etc. Think any of those kids have seen a Clark Gable film? And even people over 50 probably don't remember Senator Claghorn.

While that all may be true, as a kid in the late 70s I didn't get any of those references either and still loved those cartoons. Those references are much like the ones in Animaniacs that are targeted for the parents/adults of my generation or just for the fun of the writers/animators. The quality of the writing and animation isn't lost. I even loved the older cartoons from the Betty Boop era that were just wacky and sometimes surreal. Good stuff is good stuff.

As a child, my grandfather used to tell me stories about the mad scientist Clintone and his horrific assistant Algore. They had nothing to do with politics, and I never got the reference at the time, but I still found them highly entertaining.

Just wondering why you're interested in cable company decisions. Where were you when UPN and the WB merged?
bones said @ 8:23am GMT on 23rd Oct
That was in 2006, right? I was probably at home, on my couch. Watching cartoons.

I figured SEers might be interested in a new front for original content, especially after that dark period when CN was trying to eliminate all cartoons in favor of cheap child actor labor.

The scariest part about the child actor shows is the concept the channels have of children. The Disney Channel spawn of sassy, spunky girl tweens and middle-manager boys come to mind.

Exactly. So it seems reasonable to wonder why Boomerang is doing this. It's not for a love of the medium. If it's to save Boomerang, then this won't be a big shift. If it's an executive making their mark, we could expect more (hopefully positive) changes in the future.

I am eager to see how it turns out.

Nothing against you, arrowhen. I just don't want to keep looking at this.
