If not us, who? If not now, when? BRONTOSAURUS

quote [ The as-yet unnamed creature, referred to simply as the Giant by the researchers, is estimated to have been about 20m tall, 40m long and 77 tons in weight, about the same as 14 African elephants. ]

The key words are "as yet unnamed."

This would put to bed the whole apatosaurus/brontosaurus naming fiasco. If these people would get off their asses and call this one BRONTOSAURUS, it would make everybody--pedants and real people alike-- happy.

Well, it would make *me* happy.

Also, measuring things using African elephants seems a little clumsy to me. I would like to formally propose a sizing scheme that would measure everything in "olympic-sized swimming pools." For instance: "The Matterhorn masses an extraordinary 35,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools", or "Beyonce looked stunning in her red Versace dress at the awards ceremony last night. But ladies, don't even *think* about putting that dress on unless you trim down to 0.00008 olympic-sized swimming pools."

Everything you think you know about sauropods is wrong! They had trunks!

I've seen that idiocy before. Have you seen an elephant skull? The sinus is so huge, people think it gave rise to the cyclops myths. Sauropods weird elevated sinus doesn't come close looking like it could mount a trunk on it.

I think that's a brilliant idea.

This is a tricky situation. The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature does not prevent the genus name "Brontosaurus" from being used again just because it's considered invalid (as a junior synonym of Apatosaurus), for that specimen, but for the genus to be resurrected, a species that fits within it is required (not just any new dinosaur species) Another possible issue is that the original animal was described based on a composite of two different species. The code is dense and sometimes difficult to interpret, so if anyone wants to give it a shot, here you go:

I'm prepared to write a check for a million dollars to cut through the red tape. Okay, two then. What, these blokes won't haggle?

I got tired of waiting around for dinosaurs to be named what I wanted and just started giving people I know dinosaur nicknames. More fun.
