Oil CEO Wanted University Quake Scientists Fired

quote [ The billionaire CEO of Continental Resources told a dean at the University of Oklahoma that he wanted earthquake researchers dismissed ]

If you can't beat 'em, fire 'em. Or something. This is why tenure for college professors is a good thing.

I lived in Dallas for decades and just moved to Southern California. Ironically, while my old hometown is now known for earthquakes (of the fracking variety, even if the State of Texas won't admit that) and my new one definitely is (Los Angeles) I still have yet to feel an earthquake. Moved at exactly the right time.

My first SE post. Evar. It probably sucks.

I'm so glad I got the complete fuck out of that state as soon as I could.

I got my PhD and was looking all over the country for a job - a school in Oklahoma was in the running. I'm so glad I didn't have to live there.

I'll take Cal State Long Beach over University of Central Oklahoma any day.

Folks trying to get you fired is how to tell if you're doing your job.

You know, with numerous exceptions or counter examples. Just take the quip for what it is and move on.

Oh, youuuuu... It's just one of my pet peeves when someone with a totally indefensible belief in some idea like Flat Eartherism, chemtrails, crystal healing, homeopathy, etc. takes as their final refuge against all evidence to their idea being malarkey that "if they're all against you, you must be right!"

But yes, when a billionaire oil person is trying to get you fired, then you're probably on to something. Of course, finding new ways to light their wells on fire could qualify under this set of principles, but still...

I'm kind of surprised Mr. Billionaire didn't adopt the Italian method of dealing with geologists and scientists by prosecuting them for the earthquakes.

Everyone knows that when politicians dictate how higher education works, science always becomes a little better.
