social media is not real life

Strangely introduced by observations of Taylor Swift fans, this sports some nice links to other observations. It's also a book promo, mind.

Found this via a ? little annoying ? discussion on Hacker News. The most interesting part there being a comment on platform ranking mechanisms. (Thumb)

Although I tend to be suspicious of numbers that work out that neatly, generally speaking, it's certainly true.
algorithms that boost engagement, particularly by promoting negativity and outrage
Since one popular SoMe site was bought by a certain unpopular apartheid heir, the negative posts have increased, and the actual social part has faded. And I don't like it. My engagement has decreased.
