Linux developers threaten to pull "kill switch"

quote [ Most of the internet could be affected as some Linux devs threaten to rescind code in response to CoC controversy. ]

Seems to be related to the earlier post about Linus Torvalds. As someone who knows very little about Linux and its culture, I was hoping you folks could help me make sense of all this.

It appears that the more extreme, obnoxious and reasonable-compromise-averse elements of the social liberals and the silicon valley conservatives are butting heads again, and the latter are threatening to:

A: Rescind liscence to whatever code contributions they have made to Linux, which they might actually be able to do, and

B: Sue the Linux foundation for a bunch of bullshit reasons that range from dubious to hilarious.

This all stems from the "Contributor Covenant" CoC which the Linux Foundation recently adopted, which is aimed at curbing a variety of social abuses, but also apparently lacks much in the way of due process or recourse for those accused of violating it. Some people think it's ripe for abuse as a tool for witch hunts, and other people think those people are supporting racism/sexism/etc., and there's probably truth in varying degrees in both accusations.

It's already been abused to run off the guy that built Linux's software based RNG encryption algorithm. Something which Intel vehemently tried to stop so they could have a monopoly on hardware based encryption which, lo and behold, they've been caught red-handed building backdoors into.

In other SJW related news, Telltale games is shutting their doors after two years of letting SJW's dictate their hiring practices and marketing campaigns.

This isn't about "lack of compromise." It's about a group of people who have no business in IT, trying to dominate the workspace, and it's fucking everything up.

Telltale was in permanent crunch mode remaking the same game over and over trying to recapture the genie of Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us. They burned out employees at a crazy pace even for game companies, laid off a quarter of the employees in an attempt to salvage it last year, and managed to stumble along until collapsing now. How does SJW tie into any of that?

Telltale is shutting their doors just like Zynga after Farmville's popularity skyrocketed. They banked on creating more of the same games that promised "your decisions will affect the outcome of the game" but were pretty linear.

Overworking developers and a toxic environment has been a mainstay in the video game industry at large. Blaming their downfall on SJW is a fucking cop out.

If your company can't stay in business without sexual harrassment, maybe your company doesn't deserve to be in business.
damnit said @ 7:01am GMT on 24th Sep
They can't stay in business because people got tired of their games. The only reason people are still buying The Walking Dead: a telltale game series is that they are invested in Clementine's story. Fans already expect that "choice" is just an illusion in their games. They will never have multiple endings derived from intricate decision paths like Detroit: Become Human.

Sexual harassment and working developers to death is the icing in the cake. The 25 developers staying as the skeleton team to complete their obligation to the board and investors will finish their Minecraft: Story Mode five episode deal with Netflix. Game development is done.

My take is similar - Telltale had a fairly comfortable monopoly on the western visual novel game market for a good half decade or so, though their engine was always buggy and i expect developing content had a good bit of going-around-ass-to-get-to-elbow accordingly. The past year or so has seen some competitors willing to innovate ('The Council' I've especially heard as an a potential way forward for 'Telltale-like games') and include actual game mechanics instead of just barely-branching dialogue trees & quick-time events.

Internal politics may have done significant harm, but the studio's output the last few years has involved licensing what is sure to be expensive IPs - Batman, Game of Thrones, Minecraft (ugh) - for games that certainly sold less than Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead (which is probably a pricey IP at this point too).

Thank you for embodying my point.

Actually, thanks might be the wrong word.

To appease the ..!..'s they set a date were all rescind applications have to be in maybe annually or something. Then all code has to be removed from kernel's when the rescind date arrives, future updates then to have work arounds for the issues patched in. Encourages development, but back issueing a rescind fuck that.

If a few group of coder's did this then yea oh well, but then should it be allowed as a kill switch if they are not taking the code to then place it under a new copyright.

What right's do the coder's have to the code if they are not then copyrighting under a different term copyright. So yea they want their $$$

What the fuck does ..!.. mean? Is this supposed to be another code to avoid actually saying what you mean to, like ((()))?

But it is a niech sign I guess.

Code to say what you mean, do you mean shity double entendre's more crazy conversational tangents misconstrued as code.

What have you got against Lisp?

Yeah, that's not even vaguely how contracts or copyright work, and no one should consult Eric S. Raymond on anything other than nose fucking.
