Riight, it's choosing between samey rehashed social media loops (small piles) vs endless piles of “All of Soundcloud” or itch, archive.org or whatever. The idea might be to find smaller piles of stuff that are more than you can chew but not totally random. For me, it's following other people's bookmarks.
People might miss the old internet or obscure protocols because it allowed sifting through stuff from the last week in 5mins whereas even medium-sized Mastodon instances push out more posts over a day than you can scan during a break. |

Certainly true. Someone has to do the browsing and if the results are shared, others can benefit from it.
