Ny understanding is that the guillotine was looked at as a great advancement for the time. It removed the need for skill in the executioner.
The electric chair was seen as very modern and scientific, somehow killing without (necessarily) blood or dismemberment or dislocation. The common theme though, is that there should be some distance between the executioner or the method, and society. A machine, or an apparatus, or a procedure, or someone outside society. If executions are supposed to be just, why is it not an honor to carry out? |
