My job is supporting R&D projects and programmes related to sustainable plastics and capturing material at sea - in my professional opinion - has always been a non-starter. Technical difficulties aside, there is no customer for the technology needed beyond charitable endeavours and no viable market for the collected material. Preventing plastic waste before it escapes into the environment is the only viable way and significantly reducing the amount of plastic produced and used is the best first step in achieving this.

If we keep thinking the only solution is for free markets to be pivotal in waste removal then we are all fucked. it's what got us here in the first place. |
