Humans not becoming an extinct species might be beneficial in the long term, but in the short term it just doesn't make economic sense. Unfortunately, not wiping out civilisation is just too expensive.

Can't wait until the billionaires get to their bunkers stocked with years' worth of food, clinging to life, only to realize that that they hadn't been joking years before, when they berated their personal chef that they'd "rather die" than eat from a can.

We've known for years that the Paris Agreement was a paper tiger, and even the 2 degree line in the sand is genocide for a significant chunk of coastal societies.
