Cycling is ten times more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities

quote [ When we compared the life cycle of each travel mode, taking into account the carbon generated by making the vehicle, fuelling it and disposing of it, we found that emissions from cycling can be more than 30 times lower for each trip than driving a fossil fuel car, and about ten times lower than driving an electric one. ]

Keep on riding! Hopefully, you got some options there.

I hope they included the effect of the extra food I eat when I ride my bike.

That's offset by the number of cyclists who are knocked off and killed, eliminating their carbon footprint entirely.

I feel like cyclist must be easy worse for the environment than beef, but I'm having trouble finding sources.

I've been completely disabused of my notions about self-driving electric cars being helpful for the future after visiting the UK and seeing a halfway decently implemented public (unfortunately privatized) transportation infrastructure. Being on the trains were awesome! Unfortunately the US is designed around cars, our owners rely on cars to fuel their machinations, and even when our shitty politicians claim to be for upgrading our rail infrastructure it's half ass promises that will likely never come to fruition.

Seriously, even though I'm looking to buy a van soon, what I wouldn't give for an affordable (preferably free, but at least cheaper than flying) cross country high speed rail that I could hop on with a bike, my cat, and a backpack.

Ecologically, buses aren't too bad either; even more eco-friendly considering the cheaper infrastructure and higher density (per trip).

I would absolutely love a consistent bus infrastructure as well to take me from my train or subway to the general neighborhood of my destination. I just would prefer high speed rail for long journeys.

Edit: the thing to remember about the US is that everything needs to be redone because we haven't done reasonable infrastructure maintenance in this century. Like there were bridges collapsing back during the Bush Jr years and we were all yelling about how we needed proper infrastructure reinvestment while trying to protest the Iraq invasion. That was almost 20 years ago. #fuckthatwasawhileagowasntit
