Suez Canal blocked by traffic jam after massive container ship runs aground

quote [ Eight tug boats are working to free a large container ship stuck in Egypt's Suez Canal, halting marine traffic through one of the busiest and most important waterways in the world. ]

I can't help but laugh, I've made some fuck ups at work before, but holy shit.

Online ship tracker zoom out a little and witness a massive traffic jam.

You are correct, I do.

I'm so glad they both support profile photos.

Glad you like them. I've been collecting sites like this in the hopes of making a big, smart VR globe like something out of the bat cave or a hero's command center.

Just sad the one i used for satellites went down.

There's a couple out there. HAM operator communities are usually good for finding stuff like that. I've got this one in my bookmarks since it's got an API.

Is it just me, or does this feel like the sort of thing that would happen in the first chapter of a Tom Clancy novel?

And they blamed a 40kt wind. Yes folks, a 40kt wind bested a quarter-million ton barge of steel, keeled up to its eyebrows in water. A shipping container that braves the high seas and torrential weather in the middle of the ocean, but a light breeze is enough to jackknife it across a calm loch... dry that one out and you can fertilize the lawn.
eggboy said @ 2:27am GMT on 27th Mar [Score:1 Insightful]
What are you talking about? 40kn is a gale. Even in the open ocean, 40kn winds have a massive effect on what goes on on a ship.
Look how much surface area there is on the side of that ship, stacked up with containers. A crosswind would affect that even if they were at sea, with enough speed to have proper steerage, and plenty or room to adjust their heading.
In that tiny channel of course it's a danger.
And as soon as forepeak touches the sides, which it is not very far from, all that weight is just going to drive it sideways and dig it in.

I don't see the plimsoll, but although it's loaded, it's not overloaded super low in the water.

It's not a barge, it's not jackknifed, and that is not a loch. And who gives a fuck if the water is calm? There's hardly any of it, and it's a 40kn fucking wind.
donnie said[1] @ 4:22pm GMT on 27th Mar
Calling 40kts a breeze is obviously facetious. Chill out, dude.

Some reports said 40kts, but all the weather stations in the area show 20kt gust to 32kt that morning. It's pretty normal weather for the Suez. The winds were even higher the week before and nobody else got stuck then...

I'm usually the first to blame fubbery when something goes wrong, but I do feel for the poor fucks in that wheelhouse. This was kind of an accident waiting to happen. There's gonna be some pineapples.

Nothing obvious about it.

The pic in question.

Its fucking mindblowing. Like does the dick pic tell us that this happened as an accident because the ship crew is prone to fucking around, was it an innocent accident, or is this all an act of resistance and the dick pic is icing on the cake of a big fuck you? They're now saying it may take weeks to get that ship out of there.😅🤯

So I was a quartermaster in the Navy (the person who maps courses out on the navigational charts and tracks the ship's position). I can tell you with some confidence that this was probably intentional based on the complexity of the shape, and from past experience doing this myself. There are some sharp zigzags in the middle of the shape, which makes sense because you would still need to avoid other ships. What probably happened is they did a couple of loops, someone said, "Hey, that kind of looks like a dick and one ball, let's add another." My armchair guess is that the people on the bridge were fucking around, trying to be funny, which makes me think they weren't really paying attention to the important things.
