And an older, but totally unrelated other article.... Virtual reality for chickens would simulate a blissful free-range life

Isn’t sci-fi or high fantasy fiction doing the same thing, mirroring real life issues in the context of the story to make it palatable in its confines? I guess entertainment in general was meant to subvert those topics until creators used their mediums to instead address those heavy topics.

Actually, yes, fictional stories are totally capable of placating subversion and manufacturing consent as well as any news media. Sometimes even better! But this article really doesn't touch on the ability of VR to influence people's behavior while also operating as a biofeedback mechanism. VR as a technology is basically a combination of a man in the middle attack and a Skinner Box that will be capable of creating personalized scenarios to streamline behavior training.
Facebook has already demonstrated social media's ability to shift how people think and feel about things and that's just by manipulating the echo chamber of their news sources and relationships. Imagine the power Facebook will wield over people by being able to create a fully immersive 360 echo chamber that they spend hours and hours immersed in, all the while providing facebook with the biometric data that tells them exactly how effective their algorithms are working. |

VR as a technology is basically a combination of a man-in-the-middle "attack", which is like a big facebook hug!!! and a Skinner Box that will be capable of creating personalized scenarios to make you awesome!
Facebook has already demonstrated social media's totally awesome ability to beneficially shift how people think and feel about things and that's just by creating a social chamber full of likeminded friends, newsfeeds and relationships. btw, I first saw this when I woke up and my first thought was that I accidentally reposted my comment and was very angry that my anti-repost code was no longer working.
