Noam Chomsky - The 5 Filters of the Mass Media Machine

quote [ According to American linguist and political activist, Noam Chomsky, media operate through 5 filters: ownership, advertising, the media elite, flak and the common enemy. ]

Got this from avid a while back. Sadly I never finished reading Manufacturing Consent, it's on my list to get back to. This is a great summary of the concepts though. And all the more relevant as we get deeper and deeper in the weeds.

One aspect that this misses, and is incredibly relevant to current events, is that the truth is nowhere in these filters. Truth isn't more profitable, it is just a more saturated market compared to being the sole source of new lies. The media elite control access to scoops, but nothing has to be true about those scoops, it just has to draw eyeballs. Having a diverging consensus creates a flak storm, which discredits all media. And both sides get the common enemy of each other.

btw, mechavolt, the comment you made in the brexit post was good, but this vid fleshes out the concepts a bit more.

I've actually never read anything by Chomsky before. Is Manufactured Consent a good place to start?

I've not read anything else by him and I haven't gotten far enough in (only a few hours) to really have an opinion on the writing besides the concept being pretty solid... i've actually heard that Michael Parenti's Inventing Reality was better and released prior.
