RIAA's war on youtube-dl

For those of you that have any doubts about how dumb this takedown was:


  • Stuff on Youtube is freely available. Youtube-dl allows you to space & format shift things already there.

  • Yes, Youtube is encrypted. They give anybody the keys. There's no encryption cracking going on as in DeCSS.

  • Youtube-dl had examples of ripping music videos. They were free to watch. Not the best idea tactically, but space & format shifting is fair use.

  • Yes, YouTube has revenue sharing. You can tape songs off the radio without their ads too, and that's fair use.

  • If RIAA members didn't want their music downloaded off of Youtube, they could use a service that actually has access control, or use the DMCA to take the music down. Attacking the downloader is like attacking Memorex & Sony for making cassette tapes and recorders.
