This article made me realize just how long it was since I had given any thought to Saddam - a couple of decades ago he was front page news here in the USA, and a constant source of debate about how to deal with his regime and the aftermath of his overthrow.
Now, Iraq is hardly in the mainstream news at all - just another country messed up by American intervention and then left to deal with the consequences. Probably the only Americans who pay attention are the veterans who served there. My one friend who served there has nothing but regrets - his multiple tours left him thinking only that "Catch 22" was the most realistic thing ever written about war. |

I'm sure that in Nebraska and Missouri in 20 years you'll still find homes adorned with Trump tchotchkes and maga hats. Old babushkas still keep shrines to Stalin too. Personality cults don't really die, they just slowly fade away.
