A Brief History of the Music Video

quote [ From 'Starman' to 'APESHIT', Simran Hans chronicles the 50-year history of contemporary pop culture's greatest format ]

Nicely put together. One of the highlights is you re-watching Janet Jackson's “Rhythm Nation” video from 1989 (see extended).

Video killed the radio star.
Internet killed the music video television.

I'm excited to see what kills the current model. I still don't understand having to shift my music library to fucking YouTube of all places.

Wasteland diesel marauders with flame-thrower guitars made from trash killed the youtube star.

There was a time, when software like Songbird and Tomhawk promised a merge between local MP3s and web-based players, but that all faded away. Even Bandcamp cut down all music-related calls from their API.

And since fewer people own their music, there is even fewer incentive to manage libraries outside of webservices.

I've actually been running into that problem myself, lately. I have locally saved mp3 that I legally own. But the music streaming app that I was using, which says you can upload your own music, would not let me ChromeCast my own music because I didn't purchase it from them. I feel like an old man shaking his fist at the clouds, but I just do not like the negative consequences of everything moving to streaming.

Yup. Same with iTunes synching … heaps of problems, even for the simple object of listening to your music on two machines. Been moving everything back to folders, scripts and playlists since then.

Ah, a Google Music user? I still haven't transferred my stuff over, but I guess I should do it before they do it for me. Last week, I uploaded over 200 songs to Google Music, but they're not in the library, so I'm guessing/hoping they're already on YT Music.

Yeah...Google Music was literally the only streaming service that would let me upload my music, stream it anywhere, play it through Bluetooth, or ChromeCast it. All the other ones would fail at at least one of those things. I have no idea if YouTube Music is going to retain all of these things.

Too bad Google Music will eventually remove those features.
EvilNinjaX24 said @ 8:24pm GMT on 25th Sep
Well, yeah, since Google Music will soon cease to exist, after the integration to YouTube Music is officially done.

Once upon a time, videos would premier, not only in prime time, but on NETWORK television. It's crazy to think how big they got - especially the huge budgets in the 90s - in just a few years, and how far they've fallen since the turn of the century.

Two things. First :

The Fish Head Song

Secondly, the reason shit is fucked up is because as a populace, we let tech run away with everything for cash. Because before tech was there for you to use as you pleased. Now you are used to please tech and distributors of content/ advertising. Talk about overlords.
