For perspective, the total solar irradiance from the sun onto the earth is equivalent to about one Tsar Bomb (50MT) per second, or 2500 "Hiroshima" bombs (the article's unit of measure).
What the report is really saying is that the excess warming of the oceans over the past 150 years has, on average, been the result of the Earth retaining an extra 0.04% of the sun's energy normally incident on the planet. If anything, I think that's a more useful and revealing number. |
