Honestly, though, I'm 60/40 on something catastrophic happening.
Either A - Trump wins fair and square - in which case, uhhh... cool. I don't see a Trump not being in the White House moving forward. Trump loses fair and square - Trump says it was rigged and fights via the supreme court and either wins (see above) or loses. If he loses then what's the next step? He can't stay in the US, New York wants to eat him alive, so he can go to USSR or whatever. Or does he not stand down and call on all the proud boys to stand with their real president? Do we get a major/minor civil war? I can't see a scenario where Trump says, "I gave it a good run! But we lost! We'll try to get someone on the ballot in four more!" Mainly because he's calling Putin every week. Does anyone have a positive outcome that I'm missing here?

I'd put the Trumps taking over at only 30% tops. I just don't think they have the support among republicans. Still they've given the latent fascist population the vision of an absolute victory. They're not going to "calm back down". This isn't going to be the low point and the country comes back to its senses. The push is going to keep going until the entire concept of law applying to the president is just performance. I'd put that at 99%. Either we can give the far right what they want without giving up the ghost (let some states abandon the Amendments, let them turn into the obvious Dystopia they would), or we can abolish the office of the presidency all together in a general constitutional overhaul. Without that, this country will just die a death of a thousand cuts. There will be occasional pushbacks (like now with the police), but they'll have no substantive effect at all (like now with the police).

One potential upside is that Trump seems (at least to me) to be damaging his relationship with the military. Hard to pull off a coup without them.

Yeah, he might get some rank and file but probably not any lifers. Mattis roasting him went a long way on that number probably.

Sure, but would those new generals have time before January 2021 to develop enough trust among the middle and lower ranks to lead those ranks in a coup at the national level?
