Stanley Kubrick’s Rejected Monolith

No, it was a specifically a rectangular block with 1:4:9 proportions. However, it did display things to the monkeys instead of just sitting there being black.

You're thinking of the novelization of the screenplay. I just looked up The Sentinel and found out it was a tetrahedron.

The novel and screenplay were written at the same time by both Kubrick and Clarke together, and Clarke himself was publically annoyed by people who said 2001 was based on The Sentinel. So I think it's fair to say the rectangular Monolith is the canon for 2001.
