California once had mobile hospitals and a ventilator stockpile. But it dismantled them

quote [ They were ready to roll whenever disaster struck California: three 200-bed mobile hospitals that could be deployed to the scene of a crisis on flatbed trucks and provide advanced medical care to the injured and sick within 72 hours. ]

In NY, if you have a problem with a car dealer or repair shop, you can complain tot he state and we will investigate whether a violation of the regulations has occurred and try to resolve it. I am not going to get in to more detail about that because it is boring.

However, when we tell the complainant that it will be about 6 weeks before a state employee can come investigate their pissing match, they are routinely horrified at the wait time. I have to explained that there's about 60 inspectors in a state of 13 million people, and in order to have 100 guys in each of the 6 regions so we could respond instantly as apparently expected, it would cost quite a bit of money. That always calms them down.

Point is excess capacity is a VERY tough sell to tax payers. (except for killing brown foreigners, that we always have money for) FFS, we can't even pay road and bridge maintenance, and you expect Americans to pay for something that might never happen to them?(notice i am not saying 'happen at all')

After a one-two punch of 1) Grey Davis, and then the Guvernator, who both completely fucked the state economy, then 2) the entire real-estate/subprime loan debacle and subsequent nationwide depression that followed shortly afterwards, this whole thing really surprises everyone not-at-all.

The surprising part is, that the gear was given to hospitals and not ending up on EBAY.
