I've only ever seen 1 of these at a time. 2 at the most. I can't even imagine having a swarm of locusts around.

There is a metric fucktonne of useable protein...if they could harvest it. They taste a lot better than scorpions or ants though they are an acquired taste.

The Native-Americans had grasshoppers/locusts as a staple of their diets in the plains. You do have to pull out the guts by tearing off the head before eating it though, as they do carry tapeworms.

Actually the article I read about this originally went on to talk about locusts in regional kitchens, but it wasn't in English.
