The Deletion of Yahoo! Groups and Archive Team's Rescue Effort – Waxy.org

quote [ On December 14, everything ever posted to Yahoo! Groups in its 20-year history will be permanently deleted from the web. Groups will continue running as email-only mailing lists, but all public content and archives — messages, attachments, photos, and more — will be deleted. ]

The only mailing list I still expected to be on Yahoo had already transitioned to riseup.net.

Some of these preservation efforts make me wonder if it's more of a sentimental thing. Or if there really is a use in keeping 20 year old web communication public.

There is definitely a historical use - especially for a lot of technical projects - for archiving these sorts of user groups. Why decisions were made back in the day, the story of how things came to be, etc etc. These (yahoo and others) are our cultural records, for better or worse, of that period of time.
