Not controversial. Mitochondria are not part of a human, ergo it should not matter where you source it from.
You could sample the father's for example, and it should work just as well. Some people still carry their paternal mitochondrial DNA in addition to maternal (which is not supposed to happen, and is yet another kind of disease risk). Usually the mitochondria in the sperm dies after fertilization. |
