quote [ People around the world started reporting the outage on Twitter with the hashtag #facebookdown.
Facebook tweeted at 3:03 p.m. ET that it was working on fixing the problems, which appeared to begin just around noon ET, as soon as possible. But it said it didn't believe the issues were related to a DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack, a common way of bringing down websites by overwhelming them with requests. ] In San Diego facebook is flat out dead as a doornail at the moment. Where are the old folks gonna post their articles about pizzagate now?

It's possible FB is rolling out a new feature during the downtime so the suite of FB apps are equipped to handle WeChat-like mobile payments functionality.
