quote [ The MIT Technology Review recently published a story titled "The hipster effect: Why anti-conformists always end up looking the same." ]
I knew irony wasn't dead before anyone knew what irony was.

The MIT article isn't surprising: if you're basing your behavior on being different from the consensus, you're still consensus-driven.

That is also the central irony of Satanism. "Yeah, we'll take on all the baggage of mainstream religion, but we'll root for the villain."

Satanism is supposed to be a gag religion. The people treating it like a real religion seriously missed the point. The Satanists who troll schools that allow religious teaching materials to be distributed to students on campus have the right idea.

I thought that depended on which branch of Satanism you follow. Laveyan Satanists are, as someone else observed, just objectivists with candles.

My college freshman orientation gave out t-shirts saying "you're different, just like everyone else." I wish I knew where mine ended up, found some old ones from high school in a closet recently but not that.

When I lived in RIchmond we used to play a game, Hipster or VCU Art Student. In their desire to be non-conformist, the art students typically had weird colored hair, piercings, tattoos, wore tattered or paint spattered old clothes, and knit hats. It was practically a uniform.
The question was usually answered if they got onto a fixie or a tall bike. |
