Rotten Tomatoes Is Changing Its Audience Rating System Because of Trolls

quote [ Even though the general public has not yet had the chance to see Captain Marvel, that didn’t stop trolls from preemptively trashing the film on Rotten Tomatoes in what can only be described as an sexism-fueled attempt at convincing people that a movie about a female superhero couldn’t possibly be good. Now, the ratings site is taking action to deal with the problem. ]

Damn - I guess I'm gonna have to go to youtube comments to get my fill of trollish and racist comments now.

I keep saying it because it's still true: there is nothing more pathetic than a butthurt white guy.

Since 1978 we've had six Superman movies, six (?) live-action Spider-Man movies, seven live-action Batman movies, a Batman-Superman movie, three Captain America movies, three Thor movies, three Iron Man movies, three Wolverine movies, two Deadpool movies, a Green Lantern movie, a Black Panther movie, an Ant-Man movie, two Hulk movies, an Aquaman movie, a Doctor Strange movie, and one Wonder Woman movie. And that's not even getting into the lopsided gender ratios of the Avengers, Justice League, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, or Suicide Squad, or the fact that 4 of the 5 Netflix Marvel shows had male leads.

And these pathetic boy-children can't handle a second female superhero movie? If they were really the master race, the master race would be toast.

Incidentally, imdb.com used to be the place to search for info on movies. Since they got bought it the site has (as always seems to be the case) completely gone to shit and it's challenging to get their increasingly crippled search engine to do anything useful (meanwhile, being bombarded by animated ads that take over the screen). Fuck that place. Rotten Tomatoes has also gone downhill since it got bought, but it's not as bad (yet).

Because of these assholes I'm not going to be able to talk shit about it being Air Force propaganda. Also, while watching the last trailer my brain went, "IT'S A GREEN LANTERN REMAKE!" and I haven't been able to unsee it.😅

Damn. It is a Green Lantern remake, isn't it?
steele said @ 4:33pm GMT on 27th Feb
Sorry! :D

They're all derivative of the hero/heroine "call to adventure" dynamic anyway... I mean, if you squint enough enough they're all gonna look the same. But it's MCU and I'm not expecting anything but a decent flick, if perhaps a little too "Ra! Ra! Military yay!"

Besides, I liked Green Lantern. It was fun.

I feel I can safely say it's going to be a lot better than Green Lantern. Even if it's mediocre.

It means so much to me that I want to help you understand how awful Green Lantern was.
hellboy said @ 8:00pm GMT on 9th Mar
The Air Force propaganda is pretty subdued (the one time they really comment on it, the comment is critical). But it's much better than Green Lantern (the origin, when it's finally revealed, has some definite similarities).
steele said[1] @ 10:08pm GMT on 9th Mar
I watched a cam last night. I was pretty happy with it, it's about as good on propaganda as you're gonna get from a Marvel flick with that sort of character background. I think the problem is even when you've got anti-imperial messaging or anti-surveillance messaging, as with Winter Soldier, it tends to go over the average viewer's head and all they see is "Cool character was soldier, it made them (pick one: stronger, cooler, sexier, etc.)"

edit: Trying to make an "anti" movie is a bit like arguing with trolls; You think you're providing a counterpoint, but you're usually providing them with a platform. :)
hellboy said @ 3:42am GMT on 10th Mar
It's a bit like gangster movies; The Godfather was allegedly intended as a critique of the Mafia, but most viewers inevitably thought it made them look cool (same thing for Scorsese's work). It's also proven pretty difficult to make an actual anti-war movie. And the situation is aggravated by the fact that the military won't let you film their hardware unless you're making something that could be used as a recruitment film.

I did think the political subtext of CM was unexpectedly well-done, but like you say, it probably went over most people's heads. Make it more obvious and it just comes off as preachy. Baby steps.

Two Ant Man movies actually. Just pointing that out and I agree with your argument. There's a similar problem with the new Doctor Who and the Star Trek: Discovery series. Some assholes can't take a strong female lead without feeling that someone is cutting their small penises. I guess they are the same morons that are keeping us from having a Black Widow movie even after Scarlett Johansson has proven to be a great action star in movies like Lucy and Ghost in the Shell.

Oh yeah, I didn't mention the second Ant-Man because it's called "Wasp Woman and Her Beta Male Drone" (snark off: I didn't count it in my tally because the female lead actually got equal billing and equal focus, IMO, so it's a rare example of a pretty gender-balanced movie; I doubt any of the alpha boys going their own way felt it represented them). You're right about Dr. Who and Star Trek — and then there's the big dead tauntaun in the middle of the room, Star Wars (even though I thought the sequels were lame, it wasn't because they have a female lead, and Rogue One was the best SW film since the original trilogy in spite of its production troubles).

Johansson's Black Widow has already been great in... six movies so far? (I've only seen four of those) Better than Hawkeye certainly. I've always liked the character, I hope the upcoming solo film does her justice. I'd like to see a Red Sparrow or Atomic Blonde with a better script.
Onix said @ 10:10pm GMT on 28th Feb
There is an upcoming Black Widow movie????? Now my shorts are all wet (I almost drowned in a glass of water while reading your comment).
snowfox said @ 4:54am GMT on 28th Feb [Score:1 Insightful]
And then people wonder why I despair. People can't even accept fictional female leaders, which means there's little hope of seeing many real life ones in my lifetime.

I have given up on MCU films because they started having too much homework, which to me is a shameless cashgrab and sacrifices making a good film for making a piece of a greater universe. I will go see this film though if only because dollars are the only vote that matters in this country.
