HP’s Ink Subscription Has DRM That Disables Your Printer Cartridges

quote [ Printer ink is expensive. HP promises to help with a subscription service for ink, complete with cartridges that stop working when you cancel your subscription. But HP makes you count pages, and I’d rather print as much as I want. ]

And the darkness amplifies the sound of printers' ink

People should get used to the subscription model. It's going to infect everything. From your cars (already exists) to computers to your toilet. Stop paying in advance? Everything will stop working.

Subscription software sucks infected dick. I just had to say that.

It's why I still use Adobe cs6

I have CS5, but can't get it installed on the new mac os. Don't have the hack. I did when I was using the OS previous to mavericks. Same goes for fucking lightroom. I have a clean CD, but the installation certificate expired, and adobe doesn't want to give it to me even though I fucking paid for the damn thing.

Ah, that was your mistake then. What incentive does Adobe have to do anything for you, after you have paid?

CC is worth it if you use that sort of software frequently for revenue-generating activities. They continuously improve the products based on feedback and observed usage. They're giving you something for your money to be sure. I was initially dubious of the idea, but the updates are often a noticeable improvement.

I have noticed half the software line-up are web-design tools, but each one is designed to be similar to a classic product. Used to inDesign? Photoshop? Illustrator? Flash? Their original Dreamweaver? There's a web-design program that mostly looks and works on the same logic so you don't have to learn anything unfamiliar.

I suspected the products were aimed at artists who didn't want to learn anything outside their skillset, and then they made a program specifically for portfolio websites. That was when I knew.

TLDR; Yes, the forced upgrade/subscription system can be bad and is a worrying trend overall, but it isn't always bad and Adobe seems to be ok.

That makes sense. I use it to generate figures for scientific manuscripts. Sporadic, and no revenue there :/

Poverty and shitty health insurance aren't going away, because they're ways to force people to subscribe to recurring financial obligations so that some already-rich asshole can get a little more passive income. Subscription software is just one symptom of a much larger problem: the idea that most people exist just to be fed off of by the vampire capitalist class.

Yay!! Capitalism!!

I'm still waiting for the trickle down where I lick the rocks of the revenue stream. . .

Who the fuck still needs to print things? The only people I know with inkjet printers at home are either at the doorstep of or beyond 70 years old.

Printer?
I barely know 'er!

I do for work, a lot. I have a traveling position so my office is at home. I use a color laser at home and have a portable inkjet when on site.

HP LaserJet printer, Canon Inkjet. My personal printer is an inkjet, but it is 15+ years old and I just use the work one now.
donnie said @ 5:00am GMT on 10th Feb
I get a laser printer for work. Inkjet is just mental.
ubie said @ 5:29am GMT on 11th Feb
Find me a portable color laser printer with its own battery and I'll be all over it.
donnie said @ 10:23pm GMT on 11th Feb
Well, now we're scope creeping here - portable with a battery is a niche need. Totally justifiable. I'm talking about the $69 BestBuy desktop inkjet consumer crap that this post is talking about.

I use a work printer for black and whites and if I need something more I can go to a copy shop or CVS or something. My preference for work printer is brother MFC L5800DW. Ink clogs up when you don't use it every day. I prefer toner and laser.
