The RPM Challenge

quote [ That’s 10 songs or 35 minutes of original material recorded during the month of February. Go ahead… put it to tape. ]

I double dog dare anyone with a noise-maker and a record-y device to try this!

Hadn't heard of this until now, perfect timing, I had been looking for a kick in the ass to get back at making music. Signed up!

How is this different from "February Album Writing Month (fawm.org), who encourage artists to write 14 new songs in February"? I guess the more, the merrier; whatever gets you there, etc.

FAWM is more focused on writing, RPM is about recording. So, like, recording a 35 minute improvised ambient synth jam would count as an "album" for RPM but only one "song" for FAWM, while 14 sets of lyrics and chord diagrams in a notebook would count as 14 songs for FAWM, but wouldn't be an album for RPM unless you recorded it.

Both are just an excuse to do stuff you like anyway, but with the added motivation of working against a deadline.

No musician, but If someone started a playlist challenge, I'd be in!

Create a playlist of 14 top 100 meaningful pop songs that have debuted since February 2018 and be prepared to defend each one.

Uh! You had me there: Are there meaningful top 100 songs? Gonna try with obscure releases! So long, there's always Said the Gramophone.

[ed. sorry, mixed up the reply thing again]

If I didn't have a son and thriving business, or loved either a bit less...

Record an album with your son! It'll be a treasured childhood memory and/or something you can drag out to embarrass him in front of his dates.

When I've tried making music with him, trying a variety of instruments over years, he quickly tells me to stop and suggests something non-musical we can do together. We watched Coco as a family recently, which presents a lot of generational music feels, and I told him I look forward to making music with him some day and that his mom would also really love that. The last few days, he started singing and asking me to sing along too, so I'll keep trying and we'll watch Coco again, see what can be made from it.
