Probably not helping the kids learn to deal with life much at a church retreat.

Eh, I dunno. I'm no fan of religion, but if you're a church kid anyway you probably have a better chance of learning something useful about life from a church retreat than from a sermon. Just having a grown-up who isn't a parent or a teacher be willing to listen and take you seriously when you talk about your life is kind of a huge deal at that age.
