Kind of a follow-on to my population mountains post, here's another interesting perspective using computer representations of demographic data.

Prisons and schools are pretty easy to spot using demographic data. When I used to review the quality of this data, I'd have a mapping tool open on one screen that would flag prison/college geographies so when I spotted these spikes they were easy to explain.
One of the more interesting oddities I found was a small community in the southern United States that suddenly had a huge influx of American Samoans. I was swearing up and down it was a data error, when I discovered a refugee relocation program for American Samoans displaced by global warming. Fucking love this shit. |
